Dear Esteemed Readers,
I would like to convey my heartfelt greetings and regards to all of you from Ankara.
Cities have been the centers of culture, civilization and social life that have contributed to the development of humanity since the first age. Nowadays, more than half of the human population lives in cities. In addition, the capitals / administrative cities of the countries differ from other cities because they reveal the character of the nation in where they are situated, host diplomatic missions, business centers of international companies and all state institutions.
The World Administrative Cities Association (WACA) became an international association upon the proposal of Ankara after the round table meeting held in Sejong in 2017 and completed its establishment process with the First General Assembly held in Ankara in 2018. Today, with the contributions of our valuable members, WACA have the characteristics of an important international platform where administrative cities / capitals from all over the world come together, discussing global problems concerning not only administrative cities but also all metropolises, sharing solutions and good examples.
As we all know, while we make great efforts to increase the level of welfare and ensure sustainable development in our cities, we also have to deal with the extinction of resources, climate change, cyber attacks, global terror, security and many other problems. Our task starts right at this point. It is certain that there are problems, but it is a fact that when we overcome these problems, we will establish more livable cities for our citizens.
Such that nowadays we are all fighting a pandemic that has influenced the whole world, and the COVID-19 epidemic has once again shown us that without international solidarity and cooperation we will not be able to survive these difficult days. It is clear that once this global pandemic ends, the whole world will struggle for restructuring. This process has gone beyond being just a public health problem, and turned into a total struggle that requires restructuring in all areas of economic, social, cultural and technical. The role of local government organizations have also gained great importance in ensuring international cooperation.
However, since it is not possible to carry out studies that require face-to-face communication due to the current conditions, with the contribution of technology, online meetings, websites and similar communication tools make important contributions to our activities. For this reason, the website of our association has been a very rational step to ensure the continuation of our collaborations. I have no doubt that the experiences, good practices and suggestions that we will share regarding city administration via this website, will be a source of inspiration for our future activities and will enable us to provide better quality services to our citizens. I strongly believe that each and every step taken together in the direction of healthy development of our cities and increasing social welfare will make us stronger and make our world more livable.
Lastly, as the term chairman of the WACA, sincerely thanking every member city and in particular to WACA Secretary General, Mr. Rhee Yong-il, for their contribution to the work of our association, I wish our solidarity and cooperation to be permanent.
Mayor of Ankara
Chairman of The World Administrative Cities Association (WACA).
