As Korea’s only observation center establishing and operating high accuracy space geodetic technology, the Space Geodetic Observation Center has not only a promotion and observation center with antenna (radio telescope) with 22m in diameter and 28m in height, but also an advanced system (VLBI) which provides more accurate coordinate values than GPS by receiving radio wave from quasar (celestial bodies which cannot be distinguished from regular stars optically) billions light year away. As the 16th established in the world and 3rd established in Asia, this system provides the public with a variety of unfamiliar information about space geodetic technology and is expected to attract attention as the city’s representative landmark.
It is a system which receives radio waves from quasar billion light years away simultaneously through multiple antennas and finds location coordinate values of the observation point with high accuracy by a difference between reaching points. It not only enhances the accuracy level of national standard points but also contributes to preventing natural disasters such as earthquake by observing delicate crustal movements precisely.
