A thick forest in Donam, Geumnam-myeon, Sejong City, which was so remote that people had to take the ship, was designated as Geum River National Recreation Forest in 1993. After opening the Forest Museum in 1997, it has been highlighted as the largest natural learning center and recreation area for people in the central region of Korea.

Geum River National Recreation Forest

Geum River National Recreation Forest is located in a thick forest on the ridge of Guksabong Peak, Gyeryongsan Mountain. The central area of the recreational forest is decorated with well-organized roads, wild flower garden, Rose of Sharon garden and rose garden. At 23 centers with a total size of 20ha, about 100,000 plants are being raised. Visitors can directly see plants from not only Korea but also various countries in the world. Additionally, with farms for birds and four-footed animals built at the wild animal zoo near arboretum, visitors can see wild animals and their ecological system.

Original facilities of the recreation forest such as the trail and the house in the forest (log cabin) are located at the middle of the mountain overlookingthe wild flower garden, Rose of Sharon garden and arboretum. For the convenience of residents, only forest residents are allowed to enter by car. Major facilities include playground for children, all-purpose playing field, camping deck, outdoor swimming pool with shower and bathhouse and wooden-made physical training facility.

After passing through Bulti Bridge crossing Geumgang River, there is Forest Museum in the straight direction and Geum River National Recreation Forest at the left side. Geum River National Recreation Forest has natural appearances and mostly has broad-leaved trees. Apart from enjoying a stroll through the woods, you can enjoy hiking by climbing the mountain along the well-trimmed hiking trail (7.6km) and overlooking is the gently flowing Geumgang River, lifeline of Chungcheong.

The wild animal zoo at Geum River National Recreation Forest is separated into four-footed animal farm and bird farm with the aim of providing an ecological learning place for children and things to watch for visitors. The bird farm is separated into bird farm, mandarin duck farm and eagle farm.As the representative farm, the bird farm is installed with eight partitions to raise each species, while the environment for water birds such as ducks is created by installing a pond and fountain at the center of the farm.

By climbing to the Changyeonjeong Pavilion at Geum River National Recreation Forest, you can see the beautiful scenery of Geumgang River flowing into the West Sea.

  • As for admission fee for Geum River National Recreation Forest, 700 won for children (500 won for group); 1,300 won for youth (1,100 won for group); and 1,500 won for adults (1,300 won for group). As for parking fee, 1,500 won for compact cars; 3,000 won for small-sized cars; and 5,000 won for large-sized cars. The recreation forest includes outdoor camping site and pool. Forest Museum

The Forest Museum produces and displays actual models of the Gingko Tree of Seokdong, Nami-myeon, Geumsan-gun (Natural Monument No.365), which is a tree with the longest girth in Korea, Guardian Tree of Seonhak, Sinpung-myeon, Gongju, and Pine Tree of Anmyeondo Island. As the museum is displayed under different themes, visitors can enhance understanding of the forest and nature in Korea and its preciousness.

At the large-sized greenhouse built in the form of a glass dome, tropical and subtropical plants are raised and displayed. The glass greenhouse is filled with rare tropical plants such as bread trees, banana trees, royal palms and tomato plants as well as various cactuses, bo trees symbolizing Buddhism and olive trees which frequently appear in the Bible. Visitors can learn cultivation skills for common plants as well as experiencing on-site learning activities on plants.

As a forest commentator is available at the site, you can listen to explanations of the exhibition at a designated time. For attending a forest explanation program, you should make a reservation in advance, and individual visitors can make a reservation as well. The period for commentary is from March to November, and it is operated three times a day (10:30 am ~11:30 am. 1:30 pm ~2:30 pm, 3:00 pm ~4:00 pm). There is no fee for commentary, while admission fee for recreation forest and fee for parking lot are charged. If the limit of the number of reserved people is not reached, then on-site visitors who have not made a reservation can attend the commentary.

02Jocheon Lotus Flower Park

Jocheon Lotus Flower Park is a place where seven types of lotus flowers fully bloom at the riverside between Gyeonggu Line railway and the point where Jocheoncheon Stream and Mihocheon Stream meet each other, flowing through Jochiwon-eup and Osong-eup, Sejong City. The riverside at the lower part of Jocheoncheon Stream, Beonam, Jochiwon-eup, Sejong City, is very popular with the citizens and tourists as an ecological park for rest and stroll. As the best place for children’s natural and ecological learning, it has been developed as an ecological exploration road by planting seven kinds of lotus flowers on the deserted land, which was used as farming land.

With the size of 25,000㎡ in total, Jocheon Lotus Flower Park has a marsh where water plants such as white lotus, red lotus, water lily, iris and bulrush can be raised well and a lotus flower pond where visitors can see a variety of beautiful lotus flowers in the summer. Especially, visitors can observe the condition of the marshland from the exploration deck where visitors get to see the lotus flowers closely and enjoy ecological exploration and appreciate the beautiful scenery of lotus flowers, iris and bulrush in harmony.

One can relive the excitement by just running along the 5km riverside road stretch of the Gobok Reservoir.The Gobok Nature Park is a popular place for fishermen. The reservoir, which was intended to supply agricultural water to a total of 1,949㎢, has attractions such as outdoor sculpture park, outdoor pool, Yeongi Battle Monument Park with stage and grass plaza, Minrakjeong Pavilion and water deck for strolling over the water.

Made by building an embankment at the gorge from Obongsan Mountain (263m), a popular mountain in Yeonseo-myeon, Sejong City, Gobok Reservoir has developed mountainous areas and beautiful scenery. Additionally, the reservoir is a habitat for traditional fish such as carp and catfish and great crested grebes and spot-billed ducks. When you have a seat on the rest area, the peaceful scenery with water birds will make your mind calm.

Yeongi Battle is a battle where General Hanhuiyu, In Hu and Kim Heun defeated rebels from Yuan, who invaded Goryeo Dynasty at Geumgang River in 1291 (17th year of the reign of King Chungryeol), at the current Jeongjwasan Mountain, Yeonseo-myeon. 04Bear Tree Park

Bear Tree Park is a park where bears and plants coexist in harmony as the name indicates. As the habitat of 150 Asiatic black bears and 400,000 plants existing in harmony at the site of 330,000 square meters, the park has not only an Asiatic black bear hill but also a hill with 100 beautiful spotted deer to make visitors feel like they are in a zoo.

Created under a total of 19 theme gardens, Bear Tree Park consists of gardens with a unique Korean beauty and European style gardens, such as the Five-color Pond, Welcome House indoor garden and Bear Tree Garden. Apart from this, visitors can see the animals’ faces more closely at the pet zoo, the Asiatic black bear hill and the beautiful spotted deer hill. Moreover, as the Asiatic black bears have been raised separately for generations, and include baby bears, young bears and old bears, visitors can enjoy more by making friends with bears of different age.

Especially, seven theme gardens indicating the Bear Tree Park as arboretum are so attractive, and include Tropical Arboretum, Water Lily Hall, Iris Hall, Potted Plant Hall, Secret Garden, Juniper Hill and Songpa Hall. While hundreds of tropical plants are grown at the Tropical Arboretum, including bougainvillea, staghorn fern and Agave americana, lotus flowers in vivid colors bloom at the Water Lily Hall. Additionally, 40 different types of lilies bloom in white, pink, violet and purple colors every April at the Iris Hall to make a magnificent scene.
